How to Plan a Bedroom Refresh

We are coming up on a year living at The Cupid Colonial. Now that most of the foundational projects are complete, we can start really decorating and putting our personal touches in. This is where the fun begins!

B and P share a bedroom, and it’s pretty barebones right now. It’s time to get some personality in there. Both boys are really into cars, so we agreed on an understated antique vehicle theme. I want the space to sophisticated and timeless while still reflecting their interests.

THE PLAN:

Color Palette: We are going with green, beige, and blue as the main color palette. We will also add a touch of red with the planned rug and a couple of small accessories.

Walls: When we moved in, this room was dark grey, and the trim and doors were white. After repairing some plaster, we re-painted the walls, trim, and doors to neutral colors so the room can feel fresh until we had time to really decorate. Now that we are more settled in, I’m planning to bring texture to their walls by wallpapering a blue and white plaid pattern. This will either be a feature wall, or I’ll add wainscotting to the bottom half of the walls and wallpaper the top half.

Furniture: They already have a white bunk bed and a white dresser, so we are keeping those. While thrift shopping, I’ve been looking for a locker and a vintage roll-top desk to add to the space.

Textiles: We will be keeping their beige and black plaid curtains. I’m searching for coordinating patchwork quilts and throw pillows for their beds. I’m also adding a red and navy traditional-style rug.

There is also a secret room behind their closet. The boys don’t even know about it! I’m thinking this might be the perfect time to open that up and use it as an addition to their bedroom.

To Plan a Room Refresh:

Identify Your Needs

I always start off interior design projects by deciding the overall function of the space. What is the space used for? Who occupies the space the most often? What are their needs for the space?

Create a List of What You’re Keeping

Once the space is defined, I survey the room for what is being kept. What furniture is staying? Are there items that need to be stored there?

Write Up a Wishlist

Now that I know what is being kept, I make a list of all the things I’d like to add to the space. What can I add that will help the functionality of the space? What can I add that will add texture and depth? What will add personality?

Gather Inspiration & Create a Design Board

Then, I decide on the overall theme I want to achieve in the room. I consider everyone’s taste and the existing decor style in the home and then select a color scheme and style that compliments them. Because decor is such a visual process, creating a design board is a necessity. If I’m feeling stuck, I flip through magazines, design books, and social media for inspiration.

I’m slow to decorating. I believe that being intentional with purchases creates a unique, soulful space. And because I thrift a majority of what I decorate with, finding the perfect pieces takes time and patience. I’m not sure how long it will take to “finish” their bedroom refresh, but it’s helpful to have a wishlist and design board created so I can go shopping with more clarity and focus.
