Vinyl Safe Exterior Paint & How We Picked The Color Scheme

When we purchased The Cupid Colonial, the exterior of the house was painted beige. And while beige is one of my favorite colors (I know, how very millennial of me), I knew it wasn’t right for this house. But picking out exterior colors wasn’t easy.

We live on a main street in a historical district. The exterior needed to flow in the neighborhood and go with the age of the home. And then add in the complexity of paint vinyl siding and the inability to get paint samples due to the pandemic… it was actually a pretty stressful project.

We would have loved to remove the vinyl and refinish the original wood siding. For old home enthusiasts, that’s a highly recommended project to do. But our siding still has many years left and we are on a pretty tight budget, so we decided to circle back to that when the vinyl starts showing signs that it needs to be replaced. For now, painting was just going to have to do.

When we began the process of painting our vinyl siding, we didn’t know it would be so difficult! If you didn’t know, you can’t paint vinyl with traditional exterior paint. The vinyl can buckle and warp. And there are only a couple of vinyl-safe lines of paint. Not only are there only a couple of vinyl-safe lines of paint, but the color choices are also limited because dark pigments also cause damage to the vinyl.

Choosing the exact color scheme took weeks. I just couldn’t decide! But the answer was so obvious and I can’t believe it took me so long to realize it. The house was trying to show us the answer from the beginning.

We have a giant hand-painted portrait of the house that was left here. Someone loved the house enough to create this beautiful work of art. And in this picture, the house was a deep green with red doors. And through small holes in the siding, we could see the green underneath. And underneath the chipped paint on the doors, we could see the red.

Eventually, I realized that she just had to be restored to her original beauty.
