Items To Thrift For Home Decor

If you couldn’t tell already, thrift shopping is a real passion of mine. It’s a budget-friendly way to create a soulful, purposeful design. It also helps create jobs within the community and plays a small part in environmental sustainability. I’ve been decorating with thrift decor for as long as I can remember. Almost everything I’ve decorated and furnished The Cupid Colonial with has had a life pre-loved elsewhere.
Here I’m sharing all about the decor you can find at thrift stores to help you create a beautifully curated home that represents exactly who you are.
Textiles
The linen section is often where you can find phenomenal vintage rugs and quilts hiding. The linens are usually hanging on a rack, so don’t forget to go find this section!
Art & Wall Decor
Secondhand stores are brimming with art and wall decor. If you dig through the stacks, you’re bound to find something that inspires you. Thrifted art and wall decor can create a beautifully layered gallery wall. And if you find a lovely frame with not-so-pretty art inside, you can always replace the artwork!
Mirrors
Mirrors can upgrade your space by brightening up the room and making small spaces appear larger. I’m currently creating a collection of antique mirrors to stand in for art on a blank wall.
Kitchenware & Dishes
Thrift stores are a great place to buy kitchenware. You can always find a variety of crocks, trays, mixing bowls, utensils, dishes, glassware, mugs, pitchers, salt & pepper shakers, and canning jars.
Baskets
Incorporating baskets as decor adds layers of texture while keeping things organized. I’m not sure that I’ve ever purchased a basket outside of a thrift store because they always have baskets in a variety of shapes and sizes. I use baskets to store blankets, toys, school supplies, laundry, and any odds and ends throughout the house.
Books
Stacking vintage books is a great way to add height to decor. And beautifully aged books add character. I keep vintage books on tabletops, mantles, dressers, desks, and bookshelves.
Collections
A collection can be both a fun hobby and a way to express your personality in your decor. You can start a collection out of anything that speaks to you! I have a few collections: antique kitchen mashers, vintage mirrors, and antique rolling pins.
Furniture
Thrifted furniture can tell a soulful story about your space. And the quality of vintage and antique furniture can far outlast modern pieces. Pre-loved furniture doesn’t need to be perfect, scratches and slight wobbles are probably fine! But if you find furniture with good bones that aren’t in the condition you’re looking for, don’t be afraid to refinish it to fit your home.
The important thing is to always have fun with your finds! If it’s interesting to you and expresses who you are, that’s what matters most.
